Located in the capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara City Council serves a population of around 92,000 (2021 census). As the fastest-developing region in the country, Honiara has become a preferred destination for tourism. While 84 percent of the Solomon Islands’ population lives in rural areas and depends heavily on agriculture, forests, and fisheries, the nation is among the most affected by climate change, with adaptation costs disproportionately high relative to GDP. In response, Honiara City Council promotes waste reduction through the three R’s—reduce, reuse, and recycle—encouraging the community to lead by example in responsible waste disposal and fostering sustainability awareness among younger generations.
