The City of Onkaparinga is South Australia’s largest metropolitan council. The name Onkaparinga comes from the traditional Aboriginal place name Ngankiparinga, meaning “women’s river place.” Committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, the Council has already implemented 72 of the 79 initiatives outlined in its Climate Change Response Plan 2022–27. In March 2025, the municipality was recognised as a Tree City of the World, reflecting its careful stewardship of the urban forest, detailed mapping of canopy cover, and its goal of planting 100,000 trees by 2037. The city also works to empower young people to contribute bold and innovative ideas in combating climate change.
