Located in the southern foothills of Australia, the City of Mitcham is the second-oldest council in Adelaide, serving an urban and semi-rural population. After declaring a climate emergency in 2019, the council remains highly dedicated to tackling climate change. Key initiatives include purchasing 100% of their energy from renewable sources since 2023, replacing all light fleet vehicles with electric ones by 2030 and reducing commercial and domestic waste by 75%. The City of Mitcham is also recognised as a Tree City of the World by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), holding the highest tree canopy cover (48%) of any metropolitan council area in South Australia. Together with ICLEI Oceania, Mitcham aims to articulate real-world adaptation challenges facing local governments and the opportunities for shared solutions.
