Christchurch City Council is located on the South Island and is the second-largest city in New Zealand, with a population of around 412,000 (2024 data). The region is heavily affected by climate change, experiencing hotter and drier summers, more intense storms and floods, and rising sea levels. The Council’s activities are guided by a commitment to building climate resilience and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. Progress is regularly tracked by measuring emissions across the Christchurch region and the Council’s own operations. Committed to strong leadership, the Council works in constant partnership with its communities through its Climate Resilience Strategy and initiatives such as the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Programme.
