As Queensland’s capital, Brisbane is Australia’s largest local government by population, with more than 1.36 million residents (2024 data). The Council is actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions while helping residents lower their own carbon footprints through initiatives such as food and garden waste diversion, energy-efficient lighting, and more. It has set clear targets to reduce carbon emissions by at least 30% by 2031–32 and achieve net zero by 2050. Every investment in reducing emissions is reinvested locally, creating solutions with lasting community impact. Brisbane City Council is also driving resilience-building initiatives at both the local and governance levels, securing a sustainable future for the city.
