Flooding in Queensland and New South Wales

ICLEI Oceania would like to extend our sympathy and condolences to everyone impacted by the extreme weather and flooding in Qld and NSW over the past two weeks.

As flooding brought disaster across the eastern coast of Australia, IPCC scientists were providing deeper understanding on the trajectory of worsening disasters to come as a result of similar extreme weather events. Climate change is deepening the scale and speed of these impacts and ICLEI Oceania recognizes that local governments and their leaders are on the front line - playing a critical role in providing emergency assistance and recovery. While local governments need to ensure that towns, cities and communities are more resilient to future disasters they also need more systematic support from other levels of government. We can do better to support local governments in ways that take into account the future changes in climate and help limit the devastation.
