New Zealand Government announces Zero Carbon Amendment Bill

The New Zealand Government announced the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Bill. The bill sets the ambitious targets of reducing New Zealand’s Carbon dioxide emissions to zero by 2050.

In addition to CO2, the Bill sets a target for a 10 per cent reduction in biological methane emissions by 2030, and aims for a provisional reduction ranging from 24 per cent to 47 per cent by 2050.

“In March this year, tens of thousands of New Zealand school students went on strike to protest the lack of decisive action on climate change. We hear them. The Zero Carbon Bill outlines our plan to safeguard the future that those school students will inherit,” Minister for Climate Change James Shaw said.

The Bill will form an enduring legal and policy framework for the transition to a low emissions economy over the next 30 years. For more information on the New Zealand Government’s website click here.
