Labasa is the largest town on Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second-largest island, and serves as the principal urban centre. Located on a low-lying delta formed by three rivers, the town relies heavily on the surrounding agricultural land to support its economy. Yet, Labasa’s low-lying setting also makes the town highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change such as sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, and coastal erosion. Accordingly, the Labasa Town Council has introduced climate action plans that focus on implementing nature-based adaptation projects and protecting vulnerable communities against such impacts. With the support of ICLEI Oceania, the town aims to reduce current climate risks and build a more sustainable, greener future.
