ICLEI in Oceania

Established in 1999, ICLEI Oceania serves as the regional secretariat for ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is a network of more than 2,500 local and regional governments across 125+ countries, supported by a team of global environmental experts, driving sustainable urban development and climate action worldwide.

Why we act

Co-creating impact

Local governments are at the center of furthering a just and sustainable world. We support cities to mainstream sustainability as an integral part of urban development and bring a strong urban component to national and global sustainability policy. ICLEI creates systemic change in urban areas through practical, integrated solutions. We anticipate and respond to complex challenges, from urbanization and climate change, to ecosystem degradation and inequity, working in cities, towns and regions of all sizes.

How we act

Connecting leaders

Peer exchange and capacity building are at the core of what we do. We build connections across the local, regional, national and global levels, advocating for robust national and global sustainability policies that reflect the interests of local and regional governments and their citizens to translate global policy into local action. Through our collective efforts, ICLEI is building a sustainable urban world and elevating the trajectory of what sustainable development can be.

ICLEI’s Five Pathways framework guides local governments in designing holistic, integrated solutions for sustainable urban development, ensuring human, built, and natural systems thrive together.

Circular development pathway: This pathway transforms cities by eliminating waste, decoupling economic growth from resource consumption, and creating closed-loop systems where resources are shared, recycled and regenerated.

Zero emission development pathway: This pathway drives the transition to a carbon-neutral future through renewable energy, clean transportation, and green infrastructure to curb climate change and improve public health.

Resilient development pathway: This pathway builds cities capable of anticipating, withstanding, and recovering from shocks and stresses by strengthening essential systems and prioritising inclusive, collaborative planning.

Nature-based development pathway: This pathway protects and enhances biodiversity using healthy ecosystems and green infrastructure to provide essential services, bolster community well-being, and create new economic opportunities.

Equitable development pathway: This pathway fosters just, inclusive and livable communities by ensuring secure access to basic needs, promoting social cohesion and safeguarding the natural systems that support human health.
