Mayoral Roundtable with Chris Bowen MP

  • ICLEI Oceania Level 8, 225 Bourke Street Melbourne, 3000 Australia (map)

Friday April 8th 2022 10:45 - 11:30 am AEST (Virtual Zoom Event)

COP26 Glasgow made clear that the Australian Federal Government needs to take urgent climate action now and that this can be rapidly accelerated through multilevel action with local governments. A recent report showed that if the emission reductions planned by just 60 of Australia’s 537 local governments were met 88,200 kt CO2 emissions would be reduced, bringing Australia 96% of the way to meet its current target of 28% reduction by 2030.

A growing number of Mayors are working together to make clear that local governments play a vital role in meeting national emissions targets and address common problems that currently limit their ability to accelerate climate action. In 2021, this culminated in ICLEI Oceania delivering a Communique at COP26 to urge greater national action through meaningful partnership with local governments. This Federal Election Mayoral Roundtable is being jointly convened to enable greater climate action at all levels of Government to benefit the whole of Australian society, industry and the economy.

The 2022 Federal Election Mayoral Roundtables on climate action will convene Mayors from across Australia with Ministers and Shadow Ministers from the major parties to:

  • Understand major party priorities to collaborate with and support local governments to accelerate climate action if elected to Government.

  • Discuss the opportunity to massively accelerate climate action through meaningful partnership with local governments and how multilevel action can enable the Australian Federal Government to deliver an ambitious 2030 target as part of their Nationally Determined Contribution at COP27 Sharm El-Sheikh as per the Glasgow Pact.
