At its 48th plenary session in Incheon, South Korea, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the leading international body mandated to assess climate change – approved the Global Research and Action Agenda on Cities and Climate Change Science, the primary outcome of CitiesIPCC, the first-of-its-kind Cities and Climate Change Science conference in Edmonton, Canada this past March.

“In deciding to co-sponsor a global conference on cities and adopt its main outcome, the IPCC is a sending a clear signal around the importance of sustainable urban and territorial development and the role of local and regional governments in achieving the 1.5-degree Paris target,” says Maryke van Staden, Director of the ICLEI carbonn Center and one of the authors of the Global Research and Action Agenda. “This move will strengthen evidence-based, science-driven action in cities and help reach global goals by raising national ambitions through climate action involving all levels of government.” Read more
